Our Mission - Protect the Krill

The Cause

Our planet has been suffering from the depletion of a vital carbon sink that started 200 years ago. Krill sequester 13 billion tons of CO2, but their population has been threatened since the popularization of whaling in the 1800s. Now, krill populations are drastically depleting with the use of krill oil for Omega-3 supplements.

The Problem

Currently, krill are being overfished at an alarming rate with little to no regulations. This is only projected to worsen in the coming years driven by climate change and the overwhelming demand for krill oil used most abundantly for Omega-3 supplements, as well as aquaculture feed and livestock feed. In the face of climate change, there will only be dire consequences if this carbon sink is lost. Thus, we must act quickly.

Solutions

Krill oil must be replaced with a more sustainable product in order to restore krill populations and rebalance the Antarctic food web, saving the worlds largest natural carbon sink. Luckily, algae offers just that. Not only is it rich in Omega-3s, but it provides more available nutrients than krill oil. Until this occurs, there must be more regulations set in place to limit krill fishing before populations reach a point of no recovery.
